Fine Arts Tour - 5.5-6 hours
This tour takes you to three small representative museums for Romanian arts and artists. I have not selected the museums and visits sequence randomly. They represent landmarks for the evolution of the local art. Moreover, the buildings were actually the homes of famous artists or art lovers, and each place was transformed into a museum following various events and social/political movements.
The first one is the former house of the founder of the Romanian Belle Arts School, who was not only a painter, sculptor and designer, but also a fervent politician involved in the flamboyant political scene of the second half of the 19th century.
The second museum is the former house of a family of German origin whose all members were top artists. Father came to Romania at mid-19th century and became the first sculpture professor at the school founded by the artist whose house we visit first. He had two sons, both sculptors, and one of them was married to a painter, the very first female professor at an art university in Europe. She was also a dedicated activist for the women’s rights.
The last museum is former house of a famous art collector, a real Maecenas of his time. He supported many young artists who became famous and he also invented the concept of “art store”. He transformed his house in a museum during the reign of the last Romanian king and donated both the house and the art collection to the Romanian state, in order to make sure the art pieces would not be wasted. He survived the communist regime and lived in the house until his death.
